Opinions

Read these lines on India Uncut :

All the world is taking sides
It don’t worry me
Cause in my empire life is sweet
Just ask any bum you meet
Life may be a one way street
But it don’t worry me

Globalisation? Nuclear weapons? Racism? Corruption? Pollution? Population? Poverty? Rape? Everyone has an opinion on everything it seems these days. Heck, I have an opinion on everything, it seems. And in the middle of frenetic arguments I sometimes want to quote Nietzche, "Its hard enough remembering all my opinions without having to remember my reasons for them". There's the media, there's people you meet, websites you surf, and suddenly there's all this information falling at our feet and it seems like you have no choice but to have an opinion. Lunch time conversations that used to revolve around which passing lady had prettier shoes now somehow or the other veers around to election-fixing, or some similar, oftentimes obscure conversation. The world is full of issues. How did we, as a species manage to populate the world with so many issues? When I was growing up, my dad used to tell me every problem has a solution. So never despair, he would say. Now I feel he should have told me every solution has a problem, and where there is no hope there can be no despair. I'm not a cynic, or a pessimist, or any other depressing label that we attach to people who sound despondent about the state of life on earth. That's why I loved the words. When it seems like there's no direction in which you can turn without encountering a problem, perhaps its time to throw the towel in, cos Life may be a one way street, But it can't worry me (at least it can't if I don't let it).

Me 3rd!!!

Totally agree with Cloudy. I just finished Aunts Aren't Gentlemen :-)

And I loved that Nietzche quote!!!

And taking off on cloudy's comment, why the sudden serious-serious stuff??? Where is that story of the evil brother and the saintly sister that we got hooked on to on this blog??? Next installment please :-)

I remember laughing a LOT with Aunts Aren't Gentlemen :-)))) Funny thing about me and PGW - I usually don't remember exact plot lines of any book, but I distinctly remember how hard I laughed with every book!

Just curious - how old were you guys when you first discovered PGW? And do you remember your first book? Me first - was 13, Dad gave me Heart of a Goof (the only PGW he possessed, in spite of being a Fan - more about that later), and I was HOOKED. The fact that I didn't understand a bit of Golf, but still totally enjoyed the book is testimony to the genius of the Master.

@Guys: Dunno where my sisters are!!!!!!! And until they decide to reappear there will be no more stories :(
@Cloudy: 12, and my first was Psmith in the City, which is why I think Psmith's always been my favourite (next only to Clarence cos you gotta love Clarence!).
And yeah, I know what you mean about loving his golf stories (with the Oldest Member, hehe) and totally not knowing anything about golf :)
@Obi n Cloudy: N has it really been 3 serious posts in a row? Yikes!!!! What is HAPPENING? :O
@Sunshine: KISS principle?
@Adi: You stopped remembering? /:)

KISS principle (From Wiki) - The KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) principle is a process and design principle advising simplicity as a main goal and asset.

I think 'analyzing' and 'having to have an opinion' on everything only make complex things even more complex :-)

Wow, that makes all three of us non-Jeeves starters! Now that sounds silly as I write it, but it seemed profound when I thought of it.

And, LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Psmith. Nobody like him, is there? To me, he is right on top, even before the good Earl. Except when the g.e drapes himself like a sock over the railing of the Empress' sty.

Hehe looks like Sunshine's the only one talking about The Serious Post :D

@Sunshine: Actually heard about it but didn't connect (blame it on the hangover!)
@Cloudy: Psmith rocks! He's my all time favrit but like you sed when Clarence drapes himself or even better when he attempts to either hide from or stand up to one of his formidable sisters (and I love the aunts, doncha? Rember the one who used to eat rats..hehe) there's no1 like him. Gosh, you guys are right I need some alone time with P.G.W :P

The Psmith fans out here may or may not remember/be aware, but Leave It To Psmith was adapted asa Hindi series a couple of decades ago on Doordarshan. It was called Isi Bahaane(With this excuse), with Mazhar Khan playing Psmith and Syed Jaffery as Lord Emsworth, if I remember correctly!

@Cloudy/Revealed/Obi: I've asked this before but none of you responded ;-( Let me ask again, am I too old to start 'discovering' PGW?

@Bharath: :-( I'm not that good at saying No.. Do you really want the 1st spot that bad? (Please say no :D)

11:25 AM

Blogger Bharath Hemachandran said...

Now that you say that SS... of course I want the first spot. In fact anytime in the future u get first spot and I don't I want it! :D

Btw have u guys read the school series of PG Woodehouse? Actually I started with his school series... The gold bat etc. super books!

@Fellow PGW fans (and fans-to-be, and this means you, SS!): One, I did NOT know that M.K and S.J (gudness!!) acted in a rendition of Psmith on DD! :O
Two, ever since I first met Psmith I wanted to have a. a monocle and b. a name that read Psvasti. Three, its NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER too late to become a PGW convert!
@Bharath: Hehe good one:). Not remembering definitely counts as a valid excuse (and cmon SS, lets see some proper nay-saying here ;).
@Cloudy: I actually think non-Jeeves is the best way to start, cos honestly I like Bertie the least of all his heros. Dya like the little novellettes he wrote? The ones that weren't series? Like Jill, the Reckless?

Blogger Revealed said...

@BH: ooooh I loveeeee the school series!!!! Mike at Wrykyn???

8:44 PM

Blogger Revealed said...

Infact that's where Psmith first makes an appearance. I just adorrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeee that one :)

Blogger Cloudy said...

Love the school series too!!! Love those one-off ones too - Doctor Sally, anyone? Love ANYTHING he writes!!!!

Mike at Wrykyn is a Gem.

Obi: I knew! I knew! :D And it was pretty good too :). They had the complete flower pot throwing and everything, if I remember right....

Sunshine: I did respond to that... you didn't read it waaaaaaaaaaahhh :( Anyway, I recommended you start with the Bertie-Jeeves short stories, but I guess you can disregard that one... like Revealed says, start with non-Jeeves. My vote for Psmith.

Hehehehe Psvasti, you should consider changing the spelling! Only, people might attribute it to numerology :-{

11:18 PM

Blogger Cloudy said...

Oh and Sunshine, there's one Wodehouse that very different from the rest - it's called The Little Nugget. Recommend you read it after LOTS and LOTS of PGW...

11:20 PM

Blogger Sumithra said...

@Bhrath: Waaaaaaaaaaaaahh!! You are so mean ;-( I might let you have the first spot this time. But this will be the last time too. No more being generous. (Was that good nay-saying Revealed? :P)

11:21 PM

Blogger Revealed said...

@Cloudy: I loved Dr. Sally!!! The words Good Morning have never meant the same to me after that :D. As for The Little Nugget I lovvvvvvvvvvvvved it!!!! It was PGW at something like his best! Believe me, I seriously considered Psvasti and if I hadn't known that my mum would have silly objections to it and refuse to let me be cool I would have gone ahead and done it :D
@Sunshine: Hmmph! Not good enuf!! U shud have said Eat your heart out, Loser!!! Hehe :)
